Swapna:   In *Dark & Disturbed*, you intertwine the themes of fear and guilt, particularly within the Costa family. What inspired you to explore these psychological elements, and how do they shape the overall atmosphere of the novel?

Shaheen Kazi: The inspiration for Dark & Disturbed comes from the many books I read — before becoming an author. After writing 13 Nights of Tricks, I searched for a plot that would offer readers a truly spooky experience, especially for Halloween. That’s when the idea began to form—I started combining all these stories and characters in my mind and gradually built the framework for the book.

I wanted to explore new side of the fear through my stories. There’s something uniquely thrilling about crafting unsettling tales, and Halloween provides the perfect atmosphere for these ghostly encounters. The book grew from that desire to give readers a spine-chilling, exciting read during the spookiest time of year.

Swapna:   The eerie atmosphere of the Costa mansion plays a pivotal role in building suspense throughout the novel. Can you share your process for creating such vivid and haunting settings, and how important is setting in shaping the horror genre?

Shaheen Kazi: A horror story’s setting is crucial as it acts as a character. With the Costa mansion, I aimed to create an environment that feels alive, where every creak, shadow, and flicker of light adds to the suspense. I asked myself: What would this house feel like if I were there alone? What secrets can come out?

I also draw on classic elements of haunted houses—dark corners, old furniture, echoes of past lives—while giving the Costa mansion its unique identity.

While writing horror, the setting — shapes the reader’s experience as much as the plot. It creates the mood, sets the tone, and amplifies the fear. A good setting keeps the reader on edge because it suggests something sinister could happen at any moment, even when nothing is visible. In Dark & Disturbed, the Costa mansion is a literal and psychological trap, deepening the sense of dread and unease that defines the story.

Swapna:   Each member of the Costa family harbors deep-seated guilt and unresolved issues. How did you approach developing these complex, multidimensional characters, and how do their personal struggles enhance the novel’s horror elements?

I created complex, multidimensional characters for the Costa family in Dark & Disturbed. Each character has a detailed backstory that adds depth to their fears, making them more than just victims of supernatural events.

While developing their personalities, I also thought about intricately connecting the characters to the plot. As I continued writing, the characters became more apparent in my mind and naturally found their place in the story. This was important for engaging the readers with the characters and the plot.

The psychological struggles of the Costa family are at the heart of the horror in Dark & Disturbed. They grapple with the realization that they cannot escape their past, no matter how hard they try. I aimed to ensure that the readers are intrigued by the character’s past and how it shapes the horror.

Swapna:   The novel is split into two parts, “Before Party” and “After Party,” which adds layers of mystery and intrigue. Why did you choose this structure, and how do you think it contributes to the pacing and suspense of the story?

Shaheen Kazi: I decided to split the novel into “Before Party” and “After Party” to create a clear distinction between the suspense buildup and the mystery untangled. The “Before Party” section establishes the normalcy of the Costa family as they prepare for their Halloween gathering while subtly hinting that something isn’t quite right. This part is slower-paced, allowing readers to connect with the characters and feel the creeping tension as they approach the party.

On the other hand, the “After Party” section is where everything takes a dark turn. This is where the secrets come to light, the suspense tightens, and the horror unfolds. Splitting the story this way helps keep the pacing balanced. The first half builds anticipation, while the second half delivers the twists, revelations, and intensity readers crave in a horror novel.

This structure also plays with the idea of a party being a time of celebration, but in this case, it becomes the backdrop for something far more sinister. It creates a sense of duality—what happens before the party seems normal, but everything changes once the truth starts to unravel. The split adds mystery because readers are left wondering what will happen once the party is over, keeping them on edge as the tension builds.

Swapna:   *Dark & Disturbed* transcends traditional horror by blending supernatural elements with psychological depth. How do you balance these two genres, and what challenges or benefits did you encounter while merging them in this novel?

Shaheen Kazi: Balancing supernatural elements with psychological depth in Dark & Disturbed was challenging and rewarding. To achieve this balance, I focused on grounding the paranormal aspects in the characters’ emotional realities. The ghosts and eerie occurrences in the story aren’t just for shock value; they reflect the characters’ inner fears and guilt. This connection makes the supernatural feel more believable and impactful, enhancing the tension.

One of the significant challenges I faced in writing Dark & Disturbed was ensuring its distinctiveness from 13 Nights of Tricks. To achieve this, I integrated a series of fresh mysteries into the novel rather than presenting them as a collection of short stories. This approach keeps readers engaged and deepens their connection with the characters as they navigate their more profound emotional struggles. This narrative rhythm keeps readers on edge and fosters a stronger connection with the characters.

Blending these genres creates a more layered narrative. Readers can explore the thrill of fear alongside the complexities of human emotions, inviting them to contemplate the reasons behind the horror. Ultimately, I aimed to craft a narrative where the supernatural elements enhance the psychological depth and vice versa, resulting in a haunting atmosphere long after the last page.

Swapna:   Your novels often draw from diverse cultures and life experiences. How have your personal experiences influenced the themes and narratives in *Dark & Disturbed*, and how important is it for you to incorporate cultural diversity into your storytelling?

Shaheen Kazi: One of my family members shared an event with me two years ago, which inspired the first story I wrote for this book. As I listened, I began weaving together a plot, which ultimately helped me craft the foundation for my first story. My fascination with the diverse interpretations of ghosts and hauntings across different cultures has always been a driving force in my writing.

Different cultures have distinct ways of confronting their fears, and in Dark & Disturbed, each character carries cultural baggage that shapes their actions and decisions. These varied perspectives enhance the narrative, creating a more profound emotional impact. By exploring these themes through a multicultural lens, I aim to make the horror in Dark & Disturbed feel more relatable and grounded, resonating with readers from all walks of life.

Swapna:   As a seasoned author, what advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?

Shaheen Kazi: As someone who has been around the block as an author, I get how challenging it can be to write a book. My advice to all you first-time writers out there is to hang in there and be patient throughout the whole process. Breaking down this massive task into smaller, manageable steps is essential. It will help you stay focused and keep moving forward, even when uninspired. And remember, the first draft doesn’t have to be perfect, so just let the words flow and give yourself the freedom to make mistakes.

Also, always believe in your story. Trust your voice and stick to your vision, even if it feels overwhelming. It’s easy to doubt yourself, but remember that every successful author started right where you are now.

Lastly, read a lot and be open to learning from other writers, feedback, and your writing journey. Each step is a learning experience, and you’ll find your way with a bit of perseverance.

Swapna:   What would you say to them if you could meet your characters from Dark and Disturbed?

Shaheen Kazi: If I could meet the characters from Dark & Disturbed, I’d start by saying, “Wow, you guys know how to throw a party! Who knew guilt and ghosts were such a killer combo?” I’d remind them that they’re not alone in their struggles—after all, who hasn’t felt haunted by their past choices?

And, of course, I’d encourage them to embrace their quirks. “You’re all fabulous, just a little… disturbed! So why not lean into it? If life gives you ghosts, make ghost stories!”

Swapna:  When you’re writing an emotional or difficult scene, how do you set the mood?

Shaheen Kazi: When I write an emotional or difficult scene, I like to create an atmosphere that draws me into the moment. I often start by setting the right environment—waking up at 3 am and thinking about my plot or character. I don’t know what magic works behind 3 am, but it happens often with me. Whenever I need fresh ideas, I wake up at 3 am and start thinking about them, which has worked for me. Sometimes, I play atmospheric music, too, if needed. Immersing myself in the mood helps me connect deeply with the characters’ feelings.

I also think about the sensory details. What sounds, smells, or textures can amplify the emotion? If a character feels lost, I describe an empty room’s oppressive silence or a forgotten object’s cold touch.

Sometimes, I even write in a different location to change my perspective, whether in my bedroom or rocking chair. It’s all about finding that emotional resonance so I can channel it into the scene. And if all else fails, I take a break from writing for a few days.

Swapna :  Has writing and publishing a book changed the way you see yourself?

Shaheen Kazi: Absolutely! Writing and publishing a book has been a fantastic journey for me. It’s helped me realize that I’m not just an aspiring writer but an author with a unique voice and stories to share. This perspective shift has boosted my confidence and encouraged me to embrace my creativity fully.

Publishing a book has also deepened my love for the writing process. I’ve learned to value persistence, vulnerability, and the power of storytelling. Each book reflects my personal and professional growth, and seeing my ideas come to life and resonate with others is empowering.

Moreover, I’ve gained a newfound respect for the community of writers and readers. Connecting with others who share a passion for stories has enriched my journey. Writing and publishing have helped me see myself as a storyteller, ready to explore new horizons and take on fresh challenges.
